Art Progression of Skills

In Art and Design at Queen Victoria, our curriculum aims to foster creativity, self-expression and an appreciation for the visual arts in our pupils. Through engaging in hands-on activities, children explore a variety of materials, techniques and artistic concepts which encourage them to think critically and develop their own artistic voice.  It is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. Through a supportive environment that values exploration and experimentation, we aim to inspire confidence and curiosity in students while enhancing their fine motor skills, visual perception, and problem-solving abilities. Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the arts and the ability to communicate ideas through artistic expression.

Our Art and Design curriculum is based upon Kapow’s Art and Design and taught in three half- termly units of work each year (drawing, painting and mixed media, and sculpture and 3D) built around five strands of generating ideas, using sketchbooks, making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour), and knowledge of artists. These skills are developed and built upon each year so that progression can be seen clearly across the school.

The curriculum also develops self and peer evaluation to allow children to discuss what they have done and what they will need to continue to practise and develop to improve their art skills.  Art also develops learning across the curriculum as it helps to foster creativity, imagination and critical thinking skills.
