Attendance At Queen Victoria Primary School
At Queen Victoria Primary School, we believe that regular school attendance is crucial for our children’s academic progress, social development, and overall well-being. As an academy, we are committed to working closely with our families to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
Importance of Regular Attendance
Attending school regularly is one of the most important factors in a child’s educational success. When children miss school, they miss out on essential learning opportunities, which can have a lasting impact on their academic achievements and future prospects. Regular attendance also helps children develop important life skills, such as responsibility, self-discipline, and the ability to work well with others.

Shared Responsibility
At Queen Victoria Primary School, we recognise that attendance is everyone’s business. Our dedicated team of teachers, senior leaders, attendance officers, family support workers, and administrative staff work collaboratively to promote and support regular attendance. We believe that by working together with our families, we can create a positive and supportive environment that encourages children to attend school consistently.
Supportive Approach
We understand that there may be times when children need to be absent from school due to illness or other extenuating circumstances. In these cases, we encourage parents and carers to communicate with the school as soon as possible to ensure that their child’s absence is recorded appropriately. Our attendance officer, Mrs Halford, is available to provide support and guidance to families who may be experiencing difficulties with regular attendance.
Rewards and Incentives
To recognise and celebrate the importance of regular attendance, we have implemented a range of rewards and incentives at Queen Victoria Primary School. These include termly star awards for children with 98% or above attendance, our Attendance Crown Scheme, where classes collect jewels for class rewards, and our Fab Friday weekly family reward draw for the most improved attendance.
Absence and Penalty Notices
While we strive to work with our families to support regular attendance, we also have a responsibility to ensure that all children are receiving the education they are entitled to. In line with national guidelines, we will issue penalty notices to parents or carers who allow their child to have 10 or more sessions (equivalent to 5 school days) of unauthorised absence within a 10-school week period. These notices can result in a fine and should be taken seriously.
Late Arrival
We understand that occasionally, children may arrive at school after the gates have closed at 8:50 am. In these cases, children must be accompanied by an adult to the main school reception, where they will need to complete a late arrival form. These new procedures are in place to ensure the safeguarding of our children, particularly as we are having new school gates installed in the near future.
Keeping in Touch
If your child is absent from school, we ask that you contact the school each day by 9 am to explain the reason for the absence. You can do this by calling 01384 812545 Option 1, speaking to the attendance officer on 01384 814356, or sending an email to absences@queen-vic.dudley.sch.
