Whole-School French Overview

French – Key Stage Two

At Queen Victoria, we foster positive attitudes in our children for languages and cultures other than their own through exposure and engagement with French. Children start to develop an understanding of themselves as global citizens of a multicultural and mutually-respectful world as well as promoting curiosity about the French language, culture and French speaking countries. We use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources at Key Stage Two to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. All pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential by encouraging high expectations and excellent standards in language learning – the aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage Two.

Our main aims are for our children to be able to:

• Understand and respond to spoken and written French;

• Speak, listen, read and write with increasing confidence and fluency;

• Have a broadening horizon and foster an appreciation for other cultures

French is taught weekly with the four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing taught and grammar covered in an age-appropriate way across Key Stage Two. This enables pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning in phonics, vocabulary and grammar.

Each year across Key Stage Two, the children build on the skills that they have previously learnt to help them continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. French lessons are delivered in a fun and practical way through games, songs and oracy to promote a love of learning languages.
