Vision
At Queen Victoria, we believe every child is a mathematician. Our vision is to nurture confident and resilient learners who enjoy exploring and using mathematics in meaningful ways. We aim to make learning relevant by linking it to real-life situations, helping children develop the skills and confidence to use their mathematical thinking in everyday life and the wider world.
Mission
Through high-quality, inclusive teaching and a consistent, mastery-based approach, we provide children with the tools they need to explore, understand, and enjoy mathematics. Our mission is to build confident problem-solvers who are ready to apply their learning in the classroom and beyond.
Links to Values
- Children at the heart of everything we do:
We believe every child is a mathematician. Our teaching is shaped by their needs, voices, and potential.
- Aspiration:
We nurture confident, resilient learners who aren’t afraid to take risks, embrace challenges, and aim high.
- Responsibility:
We help children take ownership of their learning, support each other, and reflect on their progress with pride.
- Excellence:
Through high-quality teaching and a mastery approach, we strive for the very best outcomes for every child, every day.

At Queen Victoria, maths is more than just numbers- it’s about thinking, reasoning, and solving problems. We create a positive, inclusive maths culture where all children:
M.A.T.H.S.
M – Make connections
We link ideas to deepen understanding.
A – Apply in real life
We use maths in shopping, time, measuring, and more!
T – Talk and think
We explain our ideas and reasoning clearly.
H – Hands-on with tools
We use concrete apparatus, pictures, and numbers to show our thinking.
S – Solve together and solo
We work independently and as a team to solve problems.
Every classroom provides a consistent maths experience, where children know what to expect and how to succeed. Lessons are carefully structured to include:
- Fluency practice to build quick recall of key facts
- Reasoning opportunities to explain and justify thinking
- Problem-solving tasks to explore different strategies and approaches
Our Approach to Teaching Mathematics
We follow the NCETM’s Teaching for Mastery approach, which helps children to develop a deep, secure, and adaptable understanding of mathematics.
Teaching for Mastery at Queen Victoria means:
- All children move through the curriculum at broadly the same pace, ensuring a strong foundation before moving on
- Key concepts are explored in small, connected steps to develop secure understanding
- Concrete (objects), pictorial (pictures), and abstract (symbols) methods are used throughout the school
- Discussion and questioning are central — children are encouraged to explain, prove, and challenge ideas
- Misconceptions are valued and addressed, helping everyone learn
Our teachers plan rich, engaging lessons using high-quality resources, supported by continuous professional development through the Maths Hubs programme.
