Intent
At Queen Victoria, it is our intent to inspire our children to become confident, creative and effective writers. We expose pupils to high-quality literature and rich language experiences so that they engage with writing and enjoy it. Children write for a wide range of purposes and audiences and learn to apply increasingly sophisticated skills to communicate ideas clearly, fluently and with thoughtful detail.
We ensure pupils understand how writing is organised, including how to structure ideas and vary sentence types for effect. Throughout the writing process, children draft, edit and redraft, responding to purposeful feedback in order to improve the accuracy and quality of their work.
Implementation
Our writing curriculum is underpinned by high expectations, clear modelling and explicit teaching of writing knowledge and skills. All units of work are carefully sequenced across each year group in line with the National Curriculum and our school’s writing progression documents.
Children are given a variety of rich stimuli to inspire writing, including high-quality texts, film clips, images, real events, and cross-curricular links. Within lessons, the writing process is broken into clear stages: developing ideas through oral rehearsal and vocabulary exploration; teacher modelling of writing choices; and opportunities for pupils to apply learning independently.
Explicit grammar teaching is embedded within writing, ensuring children understand how grammatical choices shape meaning, voice and effect. Vocabulary development, sentence construction and organisational features are taught progressively across all genres.
Teachers provide responsive feedback during the writing journey. Pupils routinely edit, redraft and publish pieces, learning to reflect on clarity, accuracy, cohesion and impact. Across school, there is a consistent emphasis on crafting effective sentences, building cohesive paragraphs and producing polished, purposeful outcomes.
Impact
Our writing curriculum ensures a secure progression of knowledge and skills over time. Ongoing assessment and responsive teaching enable children to build upon prior learning, revisit key concepts and embed skills into long-term memory.
Pupils have regular opportunities to practise and refine writing in a range of contexts, demonstrating independence and confidence. Through clear modelling, targeted feedback and purposeful writing experiences, children develop stamina, accuracy, creativity and control.
As a result, pupils leave Queen Victoria able to express themselves effectively for a range of audiences and purposes, possessing the knowledge, skills and resilience required to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.
